From the Desk of the President
Officially, I am now beginning my eighth year of serving as LTC’s president. How time flies. As I reflect, I am most proud of the growth and success of this all-volunteer organization. A complete revision of the bylaws was accomplished with updates inserted to comply with policy changes within the governance requirements at the national level. A Rules of Competition document was developed, and race day equipment has been updated along with state-of-the-art timing equipment. But, most important, LTC has been blessed to generate a strong enough financial foundation to enable the enhancement of programs benefiting the community. These include but are not limited to assisting with the funding of many trails projects, scholarships to assist local high school student athletes as they transition into higher education institutions, pancreatic cancer research through the Jayne Snyder Fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the recent Nebraska Strong Flood relief effort, among many others. As a result, LTC’s mission has been refined into three actions—Run • Connect • Give Back. The 43rd Annual Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon kicked off with the registration of entrants commencing at several sign-up parties in Lincoln and Omaha on Saturday, January 4. Those signing up received a $5 discount plus a free beanie. Needless to say, the sign-up parties were a resounding success. However, spots remain to be filled and plenty of time remains to train, so sign up now while it’s fresh in your mind. This is LTC’s marquee event, so whether you are running or spectating or both, please consider volunteering in some capacity. Contact Ann Ringlein at lincolnrunning@windstream.net or (402) 450-5311, or Dave Hattan at dhattan@neb.rr.com.Also, don’t forget the many LTC events scheduled for the 2020 season. The first race of this brand-new decade is the 2nd Annual Tabitha Miles for Meals 10-mile run on Saturday, March 28. It is accompanied by a 5K race and the first Kids’ Grand Prix race of the season. The start and finish are on 28th & A Streets at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and covers the same popular route as last year. Only this year the weather is going to be warmer. On Saturday, May 2 a second generation of kids—many representing their grade school teams—will be running in the 33rd edition of the ever-popular Mayor’s Run around the State Capitol. Many of these kids’ parents may remember running this event as a child themselves—what goes around, comes around! As mentioned above, one of LTC’s initiatives of giving back is through the funding of high school student athlete scholarships. This is seventh year in which at least six high school senior track and cross-country athletes will be selected to receive $2,500 each in scholarship aid. Applications should be submitted to the LTC Scholarship Committee no later than Tuesday, March 31, 2020. They can be obtained from any high school head track or cross-country coach in Lincoln or Lancaster County or on the LTC website. As always, thanks for being a member of LTC and for your ongoing commitment to the Lincoln running community. Your involvement enables LTC to Run • Connect • Give Back to the community in many ways. If you are not running an LTC event, please show your support by volunteering. In the meantime, keep warm this winter.Glen MossPresident, Lincoln Track Club
