From the Desk of the President
Change is in the air, and I think this is a good thing. Shortly we will be enjoying the 20th and last running of the popular State Farm Run, most of which uses the soft limestone surface of the MoPac Trail. State Farm has decided to discontinue their sponsorship of this event plus a segment of the trail is scheduled to be closed before the end of the year for residential development and an ultimate rerouting. So in 2019, LTC is planning to initiate a new 10-mile event sponsored by Tabitha on a yet-to-be-determined certified course. Stay tuned later this year for updates. In the meantime, sign up for one last fling at State Farm and the challenge of completing a 10-mile or 5K race to open your 2018 racing season. This year’s kickoff for the 41st Annual Lincoln Marathon began at 3:00 a.m. on January 6. A fun new twist was added this year with Sign-Up Saturday, a 7:00 a.m. sign-up party at the Lincoln Running Company, complete with a cold fun run on a segment of the marathon course with water stations and some familiar faces—Elvis, Dr. JoAnn Nausler and Tom Selleck and Taylor Swift!—and an encouraging send-off from Lincoln mayor Chris Beutler. Words of encouragement also were delivered by long-time race director Nancy Sutton-Moss and, of course, our own Ann Ringlein. Planning for the May 6 race has continued throughout the winter. If you haven’t registered, there’s still time. Click here! And there are many volunteer opportunities for this all-volunteer marathon. Just call Lu Wetzler, and she will provide you an assignment that is convenient for your schedule. Her number is (402) 440-6918 and her email is lujeep@windstream.net.I am excited to announce Molly Huddle as our featured guest for this year’s marathon festivities. Molly is a two-time Olympian and recently set the women’s American record in the 10,000 meter (30:13.17) and the half marathon (1:07:25). You can catch Molly at the Cornhusker Marriott Fitness Expo at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.Don’t forget about LTC’s other spring schedule of events which will roll around quickly with the Tabitha 10K Run at Holmes Lake on April 7, the hugely popular Mayor’s Run on May 5, and the 40th Annual Havelock Charity Run 10K and 2-mile on June 2. Hopefully, Mother Nature will remember to be kind on these dates. As always, thanks for being a member of LTC and for your ongoing commitment to the Lincoln running community. Your involvement enables LTC to give back to the community in many ways. If you are not running an LTC event, please show your support by volunteering.Glen MossPresident, Lincoln Track Club
