LTC Awards $10,000 in Scholarships to Local Track and Field Athletes

Four area track and field athletes were awarded $2,500 scholarships totaling $10,000 by the Lincoln Track at the Sunday, June 4, board meeting. Scholarship recipients must be from the Lincoln/Lancaster County area and plan to compete in cross country and/or track and field at the collegiate level. The LTC established the scholarship program in 2013 to assist area track and field athletes with college expenses as athletic scholarship funds for track and field athletes are limited.“Part of our mission as an organization is promoting the sport and giving back to the Lincoln community for supporting our events. Being able to award scholarships to these outstanding student athletes is definitely one of the highlights for the Lincoln Track Club Board of Directors,” said Glen Moss, LTC president. “Being able to provide a $2,500 scholarship in order for these student athletes to continue at the next level is one way we can make a significant impact on the growth of the sport. Each of these recipients is very deserving and I look forward to following their collegiate careers.”The 2017 LTC Scholarship recipients:Bryce Holcomb, Lincoln Pius X. Bryce Holcomb ran track and cross country for Coach George O'Boyle. He credits running the 2013 Lincoln Half Marathon as an eighth grader for his track and cross country career. He had such a great experience he wanted to run in high school and will continue running for Wayne State University. Holcomb qualified for the 2017 state track meet in the 800-meter run and as a member of the 1600- and 3200-meter relays and was a two-time qualifier for the state cross country meet. He was the varsity captain for both the cross country and track teams at Pius. An academic all-state student, he will major in accounting with a minor in business. His parents are Randy and Tracy Holcomb.Tina Huynh, Lincoln Southwest. Tina Huynh was coached by Ryan Salem and Brett Schuster. As a senior, she finished tied for thirteenth at the state meet in the pole vault for the third-place Silverhawks. Overall, she had a strong senior season with seven top ten finishes in the pole vault. Huynh will pole vault for the University of Nebraska at Kearney where she plans to major in criminal justice and forensic science. Her parents are Van and Tam Huynh.Evan Johnson, Lincoln Southeast. Evan Johnson is a veteran Lincoln Track Club racer having competed in the Kids’ Grand Prix series. He ran cross country for Coach David Nebel and was a four-time state qualifier in cross country. He finished in the top forty in Class A all four years including a number ten finish in 2015. As a senior, he finished fifteenth as the Knights finished fourth overall. Johnson was also a member of the Southeast soccer team. He will run cross country at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and will major in business administration. His parents are John and Beth Johnson.Cody Selvage, Lincoln High. Cody Selvage ran cross country and track for Coach Brad Rettig. During her senior year, she ran the 400 and 800 meters and was also on the 1600- and 3200-meter relay team. At the 2017 state track meet she ran the third leg on the 3200-meter relay which finished fifteenth. Selvage plans to continue her cross country and track career at Hastings College where she will major in psychology. For over 40 years the LTC has stayed true to its roots as a non-profit, all-volunteer organization and gave $109,476 back to the community including $15,000 in scholarships in 2016. Overall, the LTC has awarded $51,000 in scholarships since 2014. The LTC is a member club of both the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) and USA Track and Field.
