Volunteer Spotlight: Nancy Sutton Moss

The Lincoln Track Club has been running Lincoln since 1975. Established by an eager group of track enthusiasts, it has evolved into a distance running organization passionate about the health and well-being of Lincoln as well as the surrounding community. The LTC is an all-volunteer organization, and this feature will spotlight the people behind the scenes.This is the first in a series of profiles of LTC volunteers. Nancy Sutton Moss, a retired teacher, has been an LTC volunteer since 1978. She is currently the marathon co-director with Gary Bredehoft.What other positions have you held:  Secretary, volunteer coordinator, marathon expo coordinator, typist for newsletter, finish-line coordinator, race co-director for cancer run.What are your responsibilities:  Putting on a first-class marathon and half-marathon.How did you initially get involved:  My first husband was involved, so I was asked to co-direct the cancer run . . . and the rest is history.Why have you continued to volunteer for the LTC:  It’s my family. I love putting on events that we can be proud of. The friends I’ve met along the way, not to mention my current husband, who was injured and volunteered to help with the marathon.What is most rewarding about being an LTC volunteer?  Having people want to run our races because we do things right. The fact that we are still an all-volunteer club. Having taken the marathon and half-marathon to where we are right now. And when someone asks LTC “how do you put on a race?”What is the most challenging aspect: Getting sponsors is a challenge.  Finding enough volunteers for certain races. Getting the paper, radio, and TV to cover all of our events.  To be known in the Midwest and the nation as an all-volunteer organization and one that puts on first-class runs. Getting local people to join LTC.How do you stay fit:  I run a little, walk, do Pilates, and lift weights. I’m also running after my niece’s babies, who call me “nana.”
