Thunder Run Recap
Nearly 350 runners ranging in age from three to eighty-five competed at the 2016 KFOR Thunder Run, held August 13. This unique event took place on the west tarmac and runway of the Lincoln Airport. Another unique aspect of this event was provided by the Nebraska National Guard, which staged an impressive display of military aircraft, vehicles, and equipment and provided up-close tours for runners and families.Winning times at this year’s Thunder Run certainly lived up to the race’s “lightning fast†tagline. The August weather conditions were relatively mild compared to most of the summer, and runners in both the 1-mile kids’ run and 5k race took full advantage of the fast, flat course. The 5k race was designated as a Nebraska USATF championship event, which helped draw a solid field of competitive runners. In the men’s race, Matt Tebo (Lincoln) finished first in a time of 15:25. Colin Morrissey (Omaha) finished second in 15:33. Winning the women’s 5k was Jeralyn Poe (East Lansing, MI) with a time of 18:14, 1:26 faster than her nearest competitor. Finishing second was Amy Barry (Gretna) with a time of 19:40.The 5k Masters races also boasted a fast field. Winning the men’s masters race was Ivan Marsh (Lincoln) with a 16:22 finish; Ryan Regnier (Lincoln) finished second in 16:43. In the women’s masters race, Amy McCracken (Lincoln) finished first in 19:45, and Stacy Shaw (Elkhorn) was second in 20:09.The 1-mile kids’ run fielded 149 finishers.
