The Lincoln running community lost one of its biggest advocates with the death of Larry Worth on Monday, April 6, at the age of 75. He was Lincoln Track Club president from 1991 to 2012, a time when running grew in popularity across the country and particularly in Lincoln. Under his guidance, the Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon became the premiere running event in Nebraska and the Kids’ Grand Prix program introduced new runners to the sport he loved.“The Lincoln Track Club lost a trailblazer with the passing of Larry,” said LTC President Glen Moss. “Larry committed over 22 years to the LTC, building strong relationships with our community partners who were critical to our success. He will be missed at our races and events.”Worth moved to Lincoln in 1973, to start his career with the City of Lincoln. He held numerous positions in the Planning Department and ended his career in the Transportation Department as the StarTran Director. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star.He was a valuable member of the Lincoln Marathon planning committee as the LTC liaison with the city and county departments. Worth worked closely with the police for all of our road races, often riding shotgun in the lead police vehicle. He also understood the importance of volunteers to the success of our races and was in charge of course monitors for the Marathon until 2012.He is survived by his wife, Mary Johnson of Lincoln; his children Rachael (Andy) Cooley of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Wally (Jennifer) Worth of Kansas City, Missouri; and grandchildren Jackson and Harper Cooley and Henry Worth. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
