To those out West, Nebraskans are known as “flatlanders.” But anyone who’s run in Pioneers Park knows that Nebraska is anything but flat! Pioneers Park is loved (and hated?) for its hilly terrain—just ask any cross country runner or any Buffalo Run runner!The 41st Annual Buffalo Run--Lincoln's oldest and toughest road race--was Sunday, September 10. Six hundred runners lined up behind a new starting line and enjoyed a downhill start until that first hill that leads up to the namesake of the race. On sunny race days, the sun blinds you as you coast down the road, but this year the clouds reigned—and rained. The short rain shower was definitely a treat!The Buffalo Run is known for its veterans competition—where you’re literally competing against yourself in the form of the average of your last five Buffalo Runs. The older you get, the harder it is to beat your average time, but this year 118 runners beat their average times! (And of course, the younger you are, the easier it is to beat your average.) Mary Wolfe and Tom Becker—the true veterans of this race—ran the course for the forty-first time.Michelle Paxton won the masters division with a time of 31:24. Mary Hillis, 24, won the women’s race with a time of 30:13, Hayley Sutter, 28, took second with 30:55, and Bridget Easley, 36, placed third with a time of 31:03.On the men’s side, Ryan Regnier won the masters division with a time of 28:06.
